AI Overviews and the Future of Local Search: How SGE Is Reshaping the Local Pack

AI Overviews surged to roughly 25% of queries at their July 2025 peak, then pulled back to about 16% by November 2025. About 30% of keywords trigger AI Overviews in US SERPs. They are available in over 200 countries and 40+ languages. Ads appear at the bottom of about 25% of AI Overview SERPs, up from 3% in January 2025.

This is not a future state. This is the current search landscape. The question for local businesses is not whether AI Overviews affect you. The question is how to ensure AI systems represent your business accurately and drive traffic to you rather than answering the customer’s question without you.

What AI Overviews Are and How They Display for Local Queries

AI-Generated Summaries Above the Map Pack: The New SERP Layer

AI Overviews appear above the traditional search results, including above the Map Pack. They provide an AI-generated summary that attempts to answer the user’s query directly on the SERP. For local queries, this summary may include business recommendations, comparison information, pricing ranges, and service descriptions.

In March 2025, Google began showing the local 3-pack inside AI Overviews again, after removing it in September 2023. This means AI Overviews can display local business listings as part of their generated response, but they may show different businesses than the traditional Map Pack below.

Which Local Queries Trigger AI Overviews (and Which Don’t)

Only explicitly local queries like “best near me” consistently trigger both AI Overviews and the Map Pack. Informational queries about local topics tend to get AI Overviews without a Map Pack. Simple navigational queries (“pizza place phone number”) typically get direct Map Pack results without AI Overviews.

The pattern is shifting. Navigational AI Overviews grew from under 1% in January 2025 to over 10% by November 2025. Brand searches are increasingly being intercepted by AI-generated summaries.

How AI Overviews Source Information from Local Businesses

AI Overviews pull from: your Google Business Profile data (hours, services, reviews, categories), your website content (especially structured data and FAQ pages), reviews (positive sentiment gets incorporated into AI summaries), and third-party sources (directories, news, forums).

The 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey shows that for AI visibility specifically, citations rank third at 13% of importance. Three of the top five AI ranking factors are citation-related. This means broad, consistent presence across directories matters more for AI visibility than for traditional Map Pack rankings.

Impact on Local Click-Through Rates

Zero-Click Local Searches: When AI Answers Replace Your Website Visit

93% of AI Mode searches end without a click, twice the rate of AI Overviews at 43%. Only 1% of searches lead to clicks within an AI Overview itself. 60% of traditional search engine searches end without a click due to AI summaries.

For local businesses, this means more customers are getting answers about your business without ever visiting your website. Your hours, your services, your pricing, your reputation are being summarized and presented by AI. If that summary is accurate and favorable, you still get the call or visit. If it is inaccurate, you lose the customer to bad AI-generated information.

Click Distribution Shift: Map Pack, Organic, and AI Citations

Counter-intuitively, click-through rates for keywords with AI Overviews have actually risen since January 2025 in some studies. The explanation: AI Overviews may increase engagement with search results by providing context that makes users more likely to click through for detail.

Websites cited in AI Overviews see a 2.3x increase in traffic via branded searches. Being cited in an AI Overview creates a visibility boost even if users do not click directly through the citation link.

Industries Most and Least Affected by AI Overviews

Service businesses with complex, variable pricing (contractors, lawyers) are less affected because AI cannot easily summarize their specific cost without context. Businesses with standardized information (restaurants, retail) are more affected because AI can summarize hours, menus, and locations without the customer needing to visit.

How to Get Cited in AI Overviews for Local Queries

Content Authority Signals That AI Systems Prioritize

Articles over 2,900 words receive an average of 5.1 ChatGPT citations versus 3.2 for articles under 800 words. Content updated within the past 3 months receives 6 citations on average versus 3.6 for outdated content. Sections with 120 to 180 words between headings receive 70% more ChatGPT citations than sections under 50 words.

These data points describe what AI systems cite, not what directly affects Google rankings. But as AI Overviews become a larger share of how customers discover local businesses, these content characteristics increasingly matter.

Question-based headings and FAQ sections boost citation chances. Structured data serves as a source signal. The clearer and more structured your content, the more likely AI systems include it in their responses.

Structured Data as a Source Signal for AI Summaries

Schema markup is a data backbone for AI evaluation. AI systems use structured data to verify and extract factual information about your business. Complete, accurate schema markup increases the probability that AI systems represent your business correctly.

This applies to all schema types relevant to your business: LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ, AggregateRating, Event, and industry-specific types.

The Role of Reviews and GBP Data in AI-Generated Responses

Reviews are actively incorporated into AI Overviews. Positive sentiment from reviews appears in AI-generated summaries about your business. Google’s AI does not just list your star rating. It synthesizes what reviewers actually say about your service, quality, and experience.

This makes review content, not just review quantity, critically important. Reviews that mention specific services, qualities, or experiences provide AI with richer source material for generating accurate, favorable summaries.

What This Means for Local SEO Strategy Going Forward

Diversifying Traffic Sources Beyond Organic Google Search

If AI Overviews capture more zero-click searches, your dependence on Google organic traffic becomes riskier. Diversify: build an email list, develop SMS communication with customers, invest in first-party data collection, and build direct relationships that do not depend on Google as an intermediary.

87.4% of all AI referral traffic comes from ChatGPT, not Google. Being visible in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other AI platforms requires presence across Yelp, media mentions, Reddit discussions, YouTube, and professional directories, not just Google rankings.

Building Direct Relationships: Email, SMS, and First-Party Data

Every customer interaction is an opportunity to establish a direct communication channel. Collect email addresses, offer text message updates, and build a customer database that you own. This insulates your business from algorithm changes, AI intermediation, and platform dependency.

Adapting Content Strategy for an AI-Intermediated Search Landscape

Write content that AI systems can parse, extract, and cite accurately. Structure information clearly. Use schema markup comprehensively. Keep data current. Make your website the most authoritative, most structured, most current source of information about your business.

The businesses that control their information across all platforms will be accurately represented by AI. The businesses that do not will be at the mercy of whatever information AI systems find and synthesize from inconsistent, outdated, or inaccurate sources.

What We Don’t Know Yet

Google’s Ongoing Experiments and Feature Instability

AI Overviews surged then pulled back. The local 3-pack was removed from AI Overviews then re-added. Ads within AI Overviews are growing. Navigational interceptions are increasing. The landscape is unstable.

Do not build your entire strategy around the current AI Overview implementation. Build for the principles that persist regardless of Google’s specific feature configuration: authoritative content, structured data, consistent presence across platforms, and strong direct customer relationships.

Regulatory Pressure on AI Search and Local Business Visibility

Government scrutiny of AI search results is increasing. Concerns about how AI intermediation affects small business visibility may lead to regulatory changes. If regulations require more transparent citation or more prominent source attribution in AI results, businesses with strong authority signals will benefit most.

The safest strategy is the one that works regardless of regulation: be the most authoritative, most accurate, most cited source of information about your business in your market.

AI Overview data and statistics in this guide reflect the landscape as of February 2026. Google’s AI search features are in active development with frequent changes. The 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey (Whitespark/Advice Local, published January 2026) provides the most current expert consensus on AI-related local ranking factors.

Practical Steps You Can Take Today

The AI-Readiness Checklist for Local Businesses

Regardless of how AI Overviews evolve, certain actions make your business more visible and accurately represented across all AI systems. Complete and maintain accurate structured data (LocalBusiness schema with all relevant properties). Keep your GBP profile 100% complete with fresh photos, current hours, and active posting. Generate a steady stream of genuine reviews with detailed customer experiences. Maintain citation consistency across 50+ directories (this matters more for AI visibility than for traditional rankings). Create comprehensive FAQ content structured with question headings and concise direct answers. Build presence on platforms AI systems reference: Yelp, YouTube, Reddit, and professional directories. Publish content regularly and keep it updated within 3 months of any changes in your industry.

Each of these actions serves dual purpose: they improve your traditional local SEO performance today and position your business for accurate AI representation as AI-intermediated search grows.

Monitoring Your AI Representation

Periodically search for your business and your service keywords in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google’s AI Mode, and Gemini. Record what these systems say about your business. Is the information accurate? Is your business recommended for relevant queries? Are competitors recommended instead?

If AI systems provide inaccurate information about your business, trace the source. The inaccuracy likely comes from an outdated directory listing, an incorrect data aggregator record, or missing information on your website that the AI filled with assumptions. Fix the source and the AI output will eventually correct.

This monitoring is manual and time-consuming today. Tools for tracking AI mentions and recommendations are emerging but not yet mature. Allocate 30 minutes monthly to check your AI representation across major platforms.
